Retrograde Resilience: What to Watch Out for in 2020

Oh, 2020. What an unforgettable year you are turning out to be.

The astrology above has helped explain what is happening below, and I have no doubts this year will be used as a pivotal case study for years to come. There are several reasons for this. Not only are we in the middle of Mercury in Retrograde right now, but there are four other planets in retrograde that are inviting us to pause, reflect, and reassess individually and collectively for the remainder of 2020.

Let’s take a look and see what to expect from each.

Venus: in Gemini, May 13 to June 25

Venus, the daughter of Jupiter, was the goddess of love, fertility, and beauty. When the planet goes in retrograde, areas such as relationships and personal resources could be impacted.

Even though this retrograde is technically over, we are still sitting in the shadow period where we are called to reflect on what has transpired. Especially since this retrograde was in the air sign of Gemini, let’s think about how we’ve been communicating with ourselves and others, especially since tensions have been high lately. Are we causing harm, or lifting up? Are we engaging in a productive way, or letting our emotions take over?

Mercury: in Cancer, June 18 to July 12

Because Mercury was known as the messenger god, when it’s in retrograde it impacts three key areas: communication, technology, and travel.

You may experience moments of frustration when things don’t pan out as expected. However, because this retrograde lives in Cancer, be sure to prioritize nurturing and self-care to give yourself a fighting chance. Especially with this pivotal moment in history related to COVID-19 and the #BlackLivesMatter movement, we need to unpack how we wish to interact with others and manage our energy during this time.

Jupiter: in Capricorn, May 14 to September 13

Jupiter was our protector and the god of justice. In astrological terms, he is associated with abundance and expansion.

However, when in retrograde, Jupiter’s energy causes us to turn the planet’s usual outward expansion inward. Sitting in Capricorn, we are called to dig deep and unpack how we plan to achieve our goals. Especially in the time of COVID-19, how do you plan to pivot your ambitions in a way that is productive yet safe? What do you need to explore within yourself to make great strides in activism moving forward?

Saturn: in Aquarius, May 11 to September 29

Saturn was the god of agriculture who understood the importance of deliberate hard work and patience. Its retrograde is moving from Aquarius to its home sign, Capricorn.

Always the steady disciplinarian, Saturn helps us slow down and reflect on what is worth our time and energy commitment, while reminding us that we have all the resources we need to be fulfilled. In Capricorn this energy can reach its maximum potential⁣⁣, so let’s take the time to put proper foundations in place and/or tie up loose ends before it moves back into Aquarius at the end of 2020.

⁣⁣Chiron: in Aries, July 11 to December 12

Chiron is a small planet or ‘planetoid’ that was discovered in 1977. Known as the “Wounded Healer,” Chiron reveals where one has been hurt as well as where there’s an opportunity for discovering healing from within.

In this retrograde, expect these wounds to make themselves known in full force with the energy of Aries. This may be in the form of people you’d rather not see, or situations that you’d prefer to stay away from. Take these as signs from the universe that there’s something you need to let go of in order to heal and progress in your journey. Use these challenging times as an opportunity to reflect and discover how these wounds can become useful lessons.

Pluto: in Capricorn, April 25 to October 4

Pluto was the god of the underworld. Astrologically, its impact is profound as it’s the planet of power, death, and transformation.

In Capricorn, we are witnessing the death of our current institutions and systems, which have been turned completely on its head due to the impact of COVID-19 and the exposed corruption of America’s leadership. This retrograde asks us, how are you reacting to our country’s (re)volution? How are you handling your own?

What’s Next

As you can see there’s a lot going on until the end of 2020 — a year that seems to have one major thing after another. While we can thank the planets for a lot of that, the other side of the coin is how we handle it on Earth below. How do you plan to benefit from these retrogrades by using them as periods of intense reflection and renewal? Where do you want to be, and how do you want to see yourself when we enter 2021?
